VAT's not on all purchases in the UK! Basic food groceries aren't taxed, and neither are kids clothes etc. The NHS was started in 1948. Both my parents lives have been saved by it (both had cancer). Americans should stop bashing a system they don't really understand.

Hi darling,I lives in Czech Republic and we have to also pay income tax,health insurance and national insurance from our wages,we also have a VAT 10% and 20% then the payment for each visit of doctor's surgery,then for prescription in chemist,damage liability for our cars and all that shit...but we will never change that probably.Take care :o)

@swordhunter12 The money issue isn't really relevant. It's a matter of scale. The NHS costs £98.6billion for a country of 60million people. The USA has a population of 300million people, which is roughly five to six times greater than that of the UK. Therefore, an NHS in the USA would cost (let's round it up to 6x98.6) £596.1billion. But, since there are six times as many people there and six times the tax revenue, as a percentage it works out to be the same.

The NHS - Nightmare health service. They killed my sister by giving her the all clear last June. She died last week from cancer which they said she didn't have. I went in for a prostrate operation, they sent me home with a in-dwelling catheter bag. I had it connected for six weeks because they forgot to tell me to come back to get it off., and I got a hospital infection which I've never got rid of.
